List of Common Terms Associated with Attorneys at Law

Lawyer
  1. A person who advises clients on their legal rights and obligations, and to represent them in legal proceedings.
  2. A person licensed by the state to advise clients in legal matters and represent them in courts of law.

Attorney
  1. A person legally appointed by another to act as his or her agent in the transaction of business, specifically one qualified and licensed to act for plaintiffs and defendants in legal proceedings.
  2. An agent or someone authorized to act for another.
  3. A person who has been qualified by a state or Federal court to provide legal services, including appearing in court. Each state requires law students to pass a bar examination, a qualifying test to practice law based on the specific laws in a particular state. The examinations vary in difficulty, but cannot be taken until the applicant is a graduate of an accredited law school (with a three-year minimum course of study) or has fulfilled extensive other training.

Attorney-At-Law
This is a longer name referring to an attorney or lawyer who is in practice. More commonly the name is shortened from attorney-at-law to attorney.

Advocate
  1. One who argues for a cause; a supporter or defender: an advocate of civil rights.
  2. One who pleads on behalf of another; an intercessor: advocates for abused children and spouses.
  3. A lawyer.

Counselor-At-Law
  1. An attorney; a counsel.
  2. A lawyer who pleads cases in court.

Counselor
  1. A person who gives counsel; an adviser.
  2. An attorney, especially a trial lawyer.

Counselor

Counsel

A party to a lawsuit; someone involved in litigation; "plaintiffs and defendants are both litigants."

Esquire
  1. A form of address showing that someone is an attorney.
  2. Abbr. Esq. Used as an honorific usually in its abbreviated form, especially after the name of an attorney or a consular officer.
